Are thermal receipts recyclable? The real cost of paper receipts

The vast majority of receipts printed in shops and cafés are thermal paper — paper coated with a chemical layer that turns black when heated, which is how the printer makes text without ink. That coating is the problem.
Why thermal receipts usually can't be recycled
Thermal paper is typically coated with BPA (bisphenol A) or its cousin BPS. These chemicals contaminate the recycling stream, so most recycling facilities ask that thermal receipts be kept out of paper recycling altogether. The result: almost every receipt you're handed ends up in general waste.
On top of that, the chemical coating means handling receipts transfers a small amount of BPA/BPS to your skin — one reason cashiers, who handle hundreds a day, are a frequently studied group.
The numbers add up faster than you'd think
A single receipt feels like nothing. But a busy café might print several hundred a day, and across a whole country that becomes thousands of tonnes of paper a year — paper that needed trees, water and energy to produce, and that's landfilled within minutes of being printed.
